Westarp quedó sobrepasado por los actos revolucionarios del
8 y 9 de noviembre de 1918. La esperanza en los reagrupamientos de última hora buscaba
asegurar al partido un lugar en el futuro de Alemania. Pero el 11 de noviembre
Westarp aceptó que el futuro inmediato del partido no interesaba a las masas.
Parecía que la presencia de Westarp ni siquiera era precisa en Berlín. Escribió
una tremenda confesión de impotencia: “como resultado de las noticias que he
recibido, marcharé de vacaciones un tiempo. No hay nada que el partido
conservador pueda hacer”.
En realidad, el espacio "institucional" del colapsado DKP fue ocupado por el Partido Nacionalista Alemán, el DNVP, fundado el 28 de noviembre de 1918. De hecho su programa fue publicado en el Kreuzzeitung el 24 de noviembre. Pero tenía una base social diferente, más desapegado de los agrarios y con más peso de los trabajadores y propietarios urbanos de servicios y los gestores administrativos. En las elecciones de enero de 1919 a la Asamblea Constituyente de la república de Weimar el DNVP obtuvo 49 diputados. La ruptura de las redes de patrocinio, desde la abolición del sistema de voto de las tres clases en Prusia, la pérdida de contactos tras la abdicación del káiser, y la nueva red clientelar establecida por el primer gobierno del SPD al reemplazar a los gobernadores provinciales y jefes municipales explican este cambio.
Debido al radicalismo dialéctico creciente en la república de Weimar, los conservadores procedentes del DKP se vieron obligados a condenar las propuestas populistas, o más frecuentemente, retirarse a la intrascendencia.
